Power and More Security Outstanding characteristics Goals for 1956 Crown Vic
Although 1955 Ford cars were valued high in almost every category automobile manufacturers delight in, ranging from quality engineering to graceful styling, the car still badly lagged behind Chevrolet in sales. With that in mind, Ford designers purposely retained much of the physical appearance from the ’55 model when they designed and built the 1956 Crown Vic.
Focusing on increased speed, the ’56 model upped its horsepower nearly 15 percent and eclipsed the previous year’s 0-60 time by 2.3 seconds. If a snappier car was the desire of an owner, he found it in the newer model which zipped to 60 mph from a standing start more than two seconds quicker than the 1955 version.
Though power was an issue for Ford in 1956, possibly more so was the company’s expressed desire to promote safety. The year before, in 1955, Ford had followed the lead set by Nash in 1949--which by 1955 had long since merged with Hudson to become American Motors Company (AMC)--by offering seat belts, at an extra price, as an option for buyers.
Part of the 1956 Ford’s strong emphasis on safety also included padded dashboards and stronger door latches.
It’s hard to believe that the less powerful 6-cylinder Crown Vic sold for as little as $2.337.
In addition, the auto was sold with three variations of V-8 engines ranging between a two-barrel with 173 horsepower to the larger Holley four-banger with up to 215 hp.
An increased valve lift, changes in differential, new distributor control diaphragm, and an automatic choke for all V-8 models, too, were new components in the ’56 version of the Crown Vic .
The popularity of this car seems to have risen through the years, possibly because of its stylish look, as it’s not uncommon for the 1956 Crown Vic automobile to be named Best of Class or even Best of Show in car shows in the 21st Century.
Tiny reproductions of this classic car are affordable in die-cast form with opening hoods, trunks, and doors. Perfectly proportioned at 1:32 scale of the original automobile, these replicas would only take up 6” of space on your desk and be a great conversation piece.
